The UP Department of Communication Research brings together leaders and scholars of communication at the 1st Communication Research International Conference on 22-23 September 2016. Expected to be attended by more than 500 international and local students, professionals, and experts in the field of communication and media, the two-day conference aims to address various communication and media issues on the ASEAN Integration and provide a regional platform for engagement and discussion among its member nations.
Philippine Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo will deliver her keynote address at the landmark event. Joining Vice President Robredo in the roster of speakers are former Department of Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez, and Thai Ambassador to the Philippines Mr. Thanatip Upatising, as well as some of the leading communication scholars in the ASEAN region, namely: Dr. Richard Seyler Ling, professor of media technology at the National Technological University in Singapore and most widely cited scholar in mobile communication studies; Dr. Sun Sun Lim, Dean of Research on Communication and New Media Program at the National University of Singapore; Dr. Clarissa David, professor at the University of the Philippines and one of the country’s Outstanding Young Scientists; Dr. Michiyo Yoneno-Reyes of the UP Asian Center, and Dr. Chalisa Magpanthong, assistant professor at the Bangkok University and noted scholar in the field of cross-border migration and terrorism.
With the theme “Voices and Noises: Communication and Integration within and across ASEAN communities,” the conference will showcase 36 research papers on communication in various contexts, such as migration, social and development issues (such as gender, health, and religion), disaster and risk mitigation, climate change and renewable energy, and peace and conflict, among others. The conference will also convene ideas and insights dealing with the social, cultural, and political challenges brought about by the ASEAN integration.
According to UP CMC Dean Elena Pernia, the conference also intends to establish CRIC as a global network of scholars and professionals in various fields of communication and media.
Hosted by the Department of Communication Research of the UP College of Mass Communication, CRIC takes place at the UP Film Center from 22-23 September 2016.
